Case Overview

• Client: Australian independent restaurant owner in Melbourne (anonymous upon request)

• Industry: Independent restaurant / Second location opening

• Location: Melbourne, Australia

• Order: Approx. 30 dining tables + 80 dining chairs + 10 bar tables + 20 bar stools, approx. 140–150 pieces

• AEONTI Customization: Dark walnut tabletop, black powder-coated metal legs, size and packaging customization

• Completed Locally by Client: Chair-back brand logo laser-engraved by a local Melbourne shop

• Core Challenge: Custom color pushed supplier MOQ to 500 pcs or added a USD 1,200 setup fee plus 28% surcharge; full-container rule rejected 150-pc orders; standard lead time was 60–75 days door-to-door, but the opening was only about 9 weeks away

• AEONTI Solution: Modular table legs + universal frames + mixed container loading + sample approval + stable 30-day production

• Result: Production completed and shipped 30 days after sample approval, 18 days expedited ocean freight, approx. 58 days door-to-door, approx. 18% lower cost than local sourcing, on-time opening, 120 additional pieces reordered for the second store 3 months later

Background

The client operates an independent restaurant in Melbourne and was opening a second location with about 80 seats. They needed approximately 150 pieces of commercial tables and chairs. To match their existing brand style, they required dark walnut tabletops and black metal legs, and hoped to add a brand logo on the chair backs.

Before contacting AEONTI, the client had already received three quotes. The real obstacle was not a lack of suppliers, but three specific rules colliding:

1. Standard items were available, but custom color raised the barrier.

Standard colors and plain table legs usually had an MOQ of 50–100 pcs. But once the client requested dark walnut and black powder coating, factories raised the MOQ to 500 pcs, or charged a USD 1,200 color setup fee plus a 28% surcharge.

2. Full-container rules rejected small orders.

In this configuration, a 40HQ container holds about 420–480 pcs. Most factories quoted full containers only and would not accept a 150-pc order. LCL shipping would have eaten the price advantage through freight and destination charges.

3. Standard lead time could not meet the opening date.

Production took 35–40 days, plus 25–30 days ocean freight — about 60–75 days door-to-door. The client had only about 9 weeks, or roughly 63 days, to opening. A standard plan had no buffer. Any production or shipping delay would mean missing the opening.

As for the chair-back logo, AEONTI assessed it and did not include it in production. Small-batch cross-border laser engraving requires extra sampling, positioning fixtures, coating tests, and scratch protection during shipping. With a tight opening date, a local laser shop was faster, more flexible, and allowed the client to confirm the result on the spot. AEONTI supplied chair backs with a flat, markable area and no logo.

Core Challenges

Challenge
What Actually Happened
Why the Client Couldn’t Accept It
How AEONTI Solved It
Custom color MOQ
Standard items had MOQ 50–100 pcs. Custom dark walnut + black coating pushed 2 of 3 quotes to 500 pcs, or a USD 1,200 setup fee plus 28% surcharge.
The client only needed 150 pcs. Ordering 500 pcs would tie up too much cash.
Used existing molds + universal frames; customized only tabletop finish and metal coating to avoid the 500-pc custom MOQ.
Full-container rule
A 40HQ holds about 420–480 pcs in this configuration. Most factories quoted full containers only.
A 150-pc order couldn’t fill a container, and LCL freight would eat the price advantage.
Mixed the order with other shipments and shared freight by volume.
Lead time
Standard production 35–40 days + 25–30 days ocean freight = 60–75 days door-to-door.
The client had about 63 days to opening. A standard plan had no buffer.
30-day production after sample approval, plus 18-day expedited shipping; approx. 58 days door-to-door, leaving about 5 days buffer.
Logo
Client wanted a brand logo on chair backs.
Small-batch cross-border laser engraving required extra sampling, positioning, and coating tests with unpredictable timing.
Advised local completion; AEONTI supplied chair backs with a flat markable area and no logo.
Advised local completion; AEONTI supplied chair backs with a flat markable area and no logo.
Local sourcing was about AUD 420/pc. China full-container pricing was lower but required 500 pcs of inventory.
Cash flow and first-time import risk.
Small-batch + mixed loading + sample approval reduced both cost and risk.
First-order risk
Client had never seen the product and worried about color, structure, and delays.
Opening date was fixed; no room for rework.
Sent color swatches, leg samples, and close-up photos before mass production.

AEONTI’s Solution

We did not ask the client to sacrifice design for a lower MOQ. Instead, we broke the order down into a combination of modular products, mixed container loading, sample approval, and stable production.

1. Modular table legs + universal frames — no tooling fee

The client only needed custom tabletop color and powder-coated leg color, not a completely new mold. We used existing table leg molds and universal frames, then customized the tabletop finish and metal coating to achieve the dark walnut + black metal look. This preserved the design while avoiding expensive tooling fees and surcharges.

2. Mixed container loading — lower MOQ pressure

A single 150-piece order would have low container utilization, and factories would not accept it. We mixed dining tables, bar tables, and chairs into one container with optimized packaging and stacking. The client did not need to order 500 pieces or pay for empty container space.

3. Sample approval — lower first-order risk

Before mass production, we sent:

• Dark walnut color swatches;

• Black metal table leg samples;

• Close-up photos of tabletop edges;

• Packaging and container loading diagrams.

Production started only after the client approved the samples. The client did not have to imagine from photos — they saw and felt the actual product first.

4. Stable 30-day production — no rushing

After sample approval, we locked in the production line and scheduled a normal 30-day cycle. This covered table leg production, tabletop customization, assembly, quality control, and packing. We did not compress processes to chase a deadline. Instead, we used standardized modules and existing molds to improve efficiency. Production finished and shipped after 30 days, followed by 18 days expedited ocean freight. Door-to-door was about 58 days, more controllable than the standard 60–75 days, and it left the client about 5 days of buffer.

5. Logo handled locally, not in production

The client originally wanted the logo laser-engraved directly on the chair backs. AEONTI advised that the furniture itself be produced by us, while the logo be done by a local Melbourne laser shop. We supplied chair backs with a flat, markable area and no logo. This saved cross-border sample approval time and avoided rework risk from shipping scratches. By only taking on what we could reliably deliver, we actually reduced the client’s opening risk.

Client Quote

“We couldn’t find a factory willing to do 150 pieces with custom color. Most quotes either forced us to order 500 pieces or had no buffer in the lead time. AEONTI didn’t make us sacrifice color or design for a lower MOQ, and suggested doing the logo locally to save time. With 30-day production and 18-day shipping, door-to-door was under two months, and we opened on time.”
